Moved house in South Australia? The 14-day rule for your new address

When the furniture is in and the boxes are half unpacked, the paperwork is easy to forget. In South Australia one piece of it has a deadline. Service SA says: ‘You must update your address within 14 days of the change.’ This article explains what that update covers, how to make it, and the other changes worth doing in the first weeks after a move.

What one update with Service SA changes

The good news is that one update does a lot. According to Service SA, updating your address once changes it on:

  • your driver’s licence, provisional licence or learner’s permit;
  • your boat licence;
  • your Service SA photo ID card for showing your age;
  • your disability parking permit;
  • your vehicle registrations, including cars, caravans, motorbikes and trailers;
  • your boat registrations.

So a household with two cars, a trailer and a caravan does not need to update each one separately.

How to make the update

Service SA lets you update your address online through a mySAGOV account, using a web browser rather than the app, or in person at a Service SA centre. The new address shows on the mySAGOV digital licence straight away. The plastic card shows it from your next renewal, unless you order a replacement.

Put it on the moving-day list

Fourteen days goes quickly in the middle of a move. Add the update to the list you made for moving day, or do it on the first evening in the new home.

Moving to SA from another state

If you have moved to South Australia from interstate, the rules are different. Service SA says you must transfer an interstate driver’s licence to a South Australian licence within 3 months, at a Service SA centre. Vehicles have the same window: an interstate-registered vehicle needs to be registered in SA within 3 months, and Service SA says a vehicle with interstate registration can be driven in SA for up to 90 days. If you are bringing your furniture with you, the page on interstate furniture removalists in Adelaide covers the move itself and the fruit fly rules on the way in.

Your enrolment to vote

Enrolment is compulsory for Australian citizens aged 18 and over, and the Australian Electoral Commission says you must keep it up to date after you move. You can only be enrolled at one address. Update your enrolment with the AEC once you have lived at the new address for a month.

The rest of the list

Beyond the government changes, these are the ones most people need in the first weeks:

  • Your bank, super fund and insurers, including home and contents and car insurance.
  • Your employer, for payroll records.
  • Medicare, your doctor, dentist and pharmacy.
  • Electricity, gas, internet and water: connect at the new home, disconnect at the old one, and read the meters on moving day.
  • Schools and childcare.
  • Subscriptions, online shopping accounts and anything delivered.
  • Mail redirection, to catch whatever you missed.

Before the move, not after

The paperwork is easier when the move itself has gone smoothly. Rules and fees change. Everything in this article is from Service SA and the AEC as read in October 2026; check their websites for the current position.
