The suburbs south of the city change character as they climb. Unley and Goodwood are flat, leafy and full of villas and bungalows. Mitcham sits at the foot of the hills face. Blackwood is up the hill beyond it, with winding streets and homes on sloping blocks. Mitcham is where the plains meet the hills. Belair Road climbs from Mitcham up through the hills to Blackwood, and the streets on either side get steeper the higher they go, with Brownhill Creek in its valley close by. In Blackwood, many homes are built on sloping blocks with steep driveways, front steps, split levels and decks. Narrow, winding streets can make it hard for a large truck to turn or to park close to the house.

Unley and Goodwood
Unley and Goodwood, just south of the park lands, are among Adelaide’s best-known villa suburbs. King William Road through Hyde Park and Unley Road are lined with shops, and Goodwood Road runs past the old Capri Theatre. Off the main roads, the streets are full of stone-fronted villas and bungalows with long central hallways, high ceilings and doorways from another era. Parking on the narrower streets can be tight, and the main roads have their own stopping rules.
Villa moves are about the hallway. A long piece of furniture has to turn from a bedroom door into a hallway that may be only a little wider than the piece.
