Furniture packing in Adelaide: what Wrap & Pack covers

Wrap & Pack is Moveall’s packing service. Its own page says it uses purpose-made boxes and wrapping for clothes, books, heavy items, fragile items, TVs and artwork, and that customers can head out for the day and come back to a house that is ready for the truck. The boxes and packing materials are supplied, so you do not need to collect cartons, buy tape or hunt for bubble wrap.

For furniture, Wrap & Pack means each piece is protected before it moves: blanketed, wrapped, its glass taken out and padded, its loose parts bagged. For the contents of the house, it means the cupboards, shelves, wardrobes and drawers are emptied into boxes that suit what is in them, labelled and ready to load. Moveall’s terms ask for loose items to be packed in cartons and furniture to be emptied of loose items before a move, and Wrap & Pack takes that job off your hands.

The materials, and what each one is for

MaterialUsed forWhy it matters
Moving blanketsEvery piece of furniture: tables, sideboards, wardrobes, lounges, bedsA thick, soft layer that takes the knocks of doorways, stairs and the truck
Stretch wrapOver the blankets, and to hold doors and drawers shutKeeps the blanket in place; it goes over the blanket, not straight on polished timber
Mattress coversMattresses and ensemble basesKeeps them clean and dry from one bed to the next
Purpose-made TV boxes and wrapTelevisionsScreens are easily damaged by pressure and need support on all sides
Artwork and mirror packingFramed pictures, mirrors, glass panelsGlass travels upright, padded, never flat under a load
Boxes in several sizesClothes, books, kitchenware, linen, toys, ornamentsHeavy things in small boxes, light bulky things in large ones
Packing paper and paddingCrockery, glassware, ornaments, fragile itemsEach fragile piece wrapped on its own so nothing touches

Wrapping the furniture

The furniture is wrapped where it stands. Moving blankets go all the way round, so there is no bare edge or corner to catch a door frame. Drawers are emptied first, then wrapped shut with the piece. Glass shelves and lift-off glass tops come out and are wrapped and stood on edge. Mirrors that unscrew from a dressing table come off and travel as artwork. Legs that unscrew are removed, bagged and taped to their piece. Upholstered lounges are blanketed and wrapped to keep the fabric clean. Leather is wrapped so it does not rub.

Some pieces need special thought. Marble and stone tops are very heavy for their size and can crack if they flex, so they travel on edge with support. Antique and veneered pieces get extra padding on carved edges and corners. Very heavy items such as a piano or a pool table come under Moveall’s Supercharge option, with extra team members and specialty equipment. See antique and heavy furniture for those.

Packing the contents of the house

  • Clothes: folded into boxes so they arrive ready to put away.
  • Books: in small boxes, because a large box of books is too heavy to carry safely and splits.
  • Kitchen: plates stood on edge with paper between, glasses wrapped one by one, heavy pots at the bottom.
  • Fragile items: ornaments, vases and glassware wrapped on their own and packed tight so nothing moves.
  • TVs and artwork: in purpose-made boxes and wrapping, one of the things Moveall’s Wrap & Pack page names.
  • Linen and manchester: in larger boxes, or used as extra padding around fragile pieces.

Every box is labelled by room, so at the new home it goes straight to the right place. If you plan to unpack slowly, say which boxes you want opened first, such as the kettle, the bedding and the children’s things.

How a packing day runs

  1. Agree what is packed. At quote time, tell us whether you want the whole house packed, the furniture wrapped only, or something in between, and which rooms are included.
  2. Set aside what stays with you. Before the team arrives, put the things you are taking yourself in one room or the car, and tell the team so they are left alone.
  3. Head out for the day. Moveall’s Wrap & Pack page says you can go out and come back to a house ready for the truck.
  4. Moving day. The wrapped furniture and packed boxes are loaded in order and carried to the rooms they are labelled for at the new home.

Furniture packing and moving: room by room

Living roomLounge suites, armchairs, coffee tables, bookcases, entertainment unit, TV boxedBooks, ornaments, games, cushions and throws
Dining roomTable with corners padded, chairs in pairs, buffet or hutch with glass securedCrockery, glassware, table linen, silverware

Before packing day, decide what is not coming. Anything you are selling, giving away or throwing out should be out of the house, or clearly marked, so it is not packed by mistake. A note on the door of a room that is to be left alone, such as a cupboard of things the new owners are keeping, saves confusion on the day.

Why packing and moving with one team helps

When the same company packs and moves, the boxes are packed the way the crew will load them: heavy items in small boxes, every box full and square so the stack is stable, fragile boxes marked, and every box labelled by room. The furniture is wrapped by people who know how it will be carried and where it will sit in the truck. Nothing waits on a half-packed room when the truck arrives, and if a question comes up about an item, there is one team to answer it.

What to keep with you instead of packing

  • Passports, birth certificates, contracts, settlement papers and anything you would need to replace.
  • Jewellery, cash and small valuables.
  • Medicines and anything you take every day.
  • Keys to both homes, the car and the letterbox.
  • Phone and laptop chargers.
  • A first-night bag: a change of clothes, toiletries, sheets for each bed, the kettle and a few mugs.
  • Pets’ food, bowls and leads.

Do not pack anything flammable, gas bottles or fuel. If you are unsure whether an item can go on the truck, ask the customer care team before packing day.

Packing some of it yourself

Plenty of households pack their own books, clothes and kitchen and leave the furniture to the crew. That works well, as long as everything loose is in cartons by moving day and the furniture is emptied, as Moveall’s terms ask. If loose items are not packed, they may not be moved or may cost extra. Our guide on how to pack furniture for moving gives the steps for anyone doing their own packing.

Furniture packing and moving, near and far

Wrap & Pack works the same way for a move across Adelaide and for one across Australia, though a long haul needs extra care. For local moves, see furniture removalists in Adelaide and house furniture removals in Adelaide. For a move out of South Australia, see interstate furniture removalists in Adelaide. If the furniture is going into a storage unit between two homes, see furniture removal and storage in Adelaide.
